WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden will be the keynote speaker Wednesday at a United Auto Workers' political convention as he works to sway blue-collar workers his way in critical auto-making swing states such as Michigan and Wisconsin. But as recently as Monday, UAW President Shawn Fain was restrained in his comments, saying as the conference opened, "We have to make our political leaders stand up with us. She said his appearance should remind union members that Biden is on their side. Rothenberg said a union endorsement is important because polling shows many UAW members are often undecided in the spring before a presidential election. By Election Day, members and UAW retirees usually vote 60% Democratic, said Rothenberg, now a public relations consultant in Columbus, Ohio.

Workers at Ford voted 69.3% in favor of the pact, which passed with nearly a 15,000-vote margin in balloting that ended early Saturday. Earlier this week, GM workers narrowly approved a similar contract. They also agreed in principle to bring new electric-vehicle battery plants into the national union contract. This provision will give the UAW an opportunity to unionize the EV battery plants plants, which will represent a rising share of industry jobs in the years ahead. Contracts with the auto companies should also lead to higher wages at auto-parts supply companies and in other industries, Wheaton said.

Photo: Olivier Douliery/AFP/Getty ImagesUnited Auto Workers employees at Chrysler-parent Stellantis have voted overwhelmingly to approve a new labor contract, bringing the tense round of negotiations between the union and Detroit’s carmakers one step closer to completion. The deal was supported by about 68% of Stellantis workers who voted so far, with only a handful of small facilities having yet to report, according to preliminary results published online Friday by the UAW. Votes from those remaining local chapters wouldn’t be enough to overcome the current margin, according to the union’s tally.

Now the United Auto Workers union can add one more. Illinois is not a political battleground state like Michigan or Ohio, which have far more auto plants. BELVIDERE, Illinois, Nov 9 (Reuters) - President Joe Biden on Thursday backed the United Auto Workers' efforts to unionize carmakers Tesla (TSLA.O) and Toyota (7203.T) and asked auto workers to reject his Republican opponent, Donald Trump. En route to the event, Biden told reporters that he “absolutely” supports the UAW's efforts to unionize Tesla and Toyota workers. Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the remark by Biden, who has backed UAW efforts in other speeches. Trump, the frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination, visited a nonunion factory in Michigan in September while Biden joined a picket line with striking UAW workers, Biden reminded workers. On Thursday, Biden will visit Belvidere to showcase that same auto plant, which has reopened as part of the settlement of a targeted strike by the United Auto Workers union. Ford envisions at least three new electric vehicles that will preserve jobs at several factories. Those and other closely held production plans by Detroit's automakers have emerged in details of the tentative contract agreements that ended the six-week strikes by the United Auto Workers union. The UAW's success in gaining commitments from the companies to build new electric vehicles at several factories represented a particular achievement. The automakers have all embraced the transition to electric vehicles as a large-scale and long-term commitment. And not all the companies’ production plans under the contract, of course, involve electric vehicles.

The investments are expected to be completed during the term of the 4½-year tentative agreement, which must still be ratified by the roughly 43,000 UAW members covered by the proposed contract at Stellantis. The tentative labor agreement was reached Saturday after roughly six weeks of targeted strikes by the union against Stellantis, General Motors and Ford Motor. The work stoppages began Sept. 15 after the sides failed to reach deals covering 146,000 UAW members with the automakers by a strike deadline. "For the first time in a long time, we've done the unthinkable: Reopened a plant," Fain said during an online broadcast Thursday, referring to the Belvidere plant, which was idled in February 2022. Heading into the talks, UAW Vice President Rich Boyer, who led the Stellantis talks, made product commitments a priority and stressed that the Belvidere plant was a make-or-break issue.

Stellantis declined to comment, saying it would wait for workers to vote first before discussing the deal. Stellantis will also offer $50,000 buyouts in 2024 and 2026 to UAW production workers, allowing it to cut costs by hiring fresh workers who start at lower wages. The UAW said the Stellantis investment commitments total about $19 billion, but that includes some previously announced plans. Stellantis has slightly longer than rival Ford to convert current temporary workers to permanent employees. That is on top of the $5,000 bonus hourly workers will get on ratification along with an 11% immediate pay hike.

DETROIT (AP) — The United Auto Workers union has widened its strike against General Motors, the lone holdout among the three Detroit automakers, after reaching a tentative contract agreement with Jeep maker Stellantis. About 14,000 UAW workers had been on strike at two Stellantis assembly plants in Michigan and Ohio, and several parts distribution centers across the country. Workers also will get cost-of-living pay that would bring the raises to a compounded 33%, with top assembly plant workers making more than $42 per hour. Like the Ford contract, the Stellantis deal would run through April 30, 2028. Negotiations between the UAW and Stellantis had intensified Thursday, the day after the Ford deal was announced.
